NON-INVASIVE TESTING

Electrocardiograms (EKG)

Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI)

Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI)

An electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) is a painless, noninvasive test that records the heart's electrical activity. It's a common test used to diagnose a variety of heart conditions. Sticky patches called electrodes are placed on the chest,  arms and legs. Wires connect the patches to a computer, which prints or displays results. The patient lies still on a table or bed while the machine records the heart's electrical activity

The ankle-brachial index is a test to assess the blood flow in the arteries of your legs. It is used to detect, monitor or exclude PAD. The disease happens when narrowed arteries reduce the blood flow to the legs and cause leg pain when walking. PAD also raises the risk of heart attack and stroke.

During this test, blood pressures are measured in both arms, thighs, calves and ankles using an inflatable cuff and a hand-held ultrasound device that is positioned on your skin. A value, known as the ABI, is generated based on the measurements.

Holter and Event Monitor

Holter and Event Monitor

A Holter monitor is a small, battery operated, wearable device that records the heart's rhythm continuously for up to 48 hours as you go about your daily activities. It is used to detect irregular heartbeats, also called arrhythmias. The device is small (about the size of a deck of playing cards), lightweight and has wires and electrodes (small patches) that stick to your skin.

An event monitor uses a smaller portable recording device to monitor your heart. You can carry or wear the device on the chest wall with an adhesive patch for up to 30 days. Unlike a holter monitor, an event recorder does not record continuously; but rather when you activate it or automatically when an arrhythmia is detected.

Device Interrogation

We manage implanted cardiac devices such as implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs), pacemakers, and implantable loop recorders from all the major manufacturers such as Boston Scientific, Medtronic, Abbott/St. Jude and Biotronik. During device interrogation a wand that is linked to a computer is placed over your device The computer then gathers information  from the memory of your device. It allows us to evaluate the implanted cardiac devices for proper functioning and adjusting as needed.
